FAISALABAD: The Mansoorabad police allegedly detained about two dozen lawyers who came to the police station in connection with the arrest of a former judge’s son on Thursday.
The police, however, say the lawyers stormed the police station, thrashed three officials and snatched the official record over arrest of a retired judge’s son.
The police detained Nauman Cheema, son of Khalid Cheema, after his car dashed against a billboard installed on Canal Road and registered a case against him on the allegation of rash driving.
Dispute arose after arrest of ex-judge’s son
Advocate Mirza Amin told Dawn that Nauman was on way to the Government College University Faisalabad when his car hit a billboard while trying to save a cyclist. He said the police arrested Nauman on the direction of the Sargodha Road ASP, who happened to be on the same road.
He said a group of lawyers visited the police station to know the reason for the boy’s arrest. And instead of being cooperative, he alleged, the police led by Sub Inspector Sufyan, locked the main gate of the police station and informed their higher-ups that lawyers had attacked the police station.
He claimed that the police detained the lawyers for nearly two hours. Meanwhile, the lawyers contacted Faisalabad Bar Association President Tanvirur Rehman Randhawa who also reached the spot and contacted City Police Officer Sohail Habib Tajik.
The CPO discussed the issue with Regional Police Officer Ahsan Tufail who asked the lawyers to reach his office and later suspended SI Sufyan, moharrar Sharif and Zafar from service, said the lawyer.
The CPO told Dawn that the SSP (operations) had been asked to probe the incident and he would submit his report within three days.
