On Saturday, a kangaroo court in Jaipur's Rajsamand district decided to blacken the face of a 45-year-old woman and parade her naked on donkey because of a 'hunch' that she was responsible for the death of her nephew.
A Times of India report said that members of a community panchayat from Thurval village, had accused the woman of killing her nephew, Vardi Singh, who was found dead on 2 November.
The villagers had not informed the police of the death, choosing to cremate the body instead.
However Singh's wife had reportedly voiced suspicions that he had been killed by his aunt.
Superintendent of police, Rajsamand, Sweta Dhankar said, the wife approached the local panchayat with her complaint. At a public meeting, the panchayat decided that the woman had committed the crime and meted out the bizarre punishment.
The humiliation had lasted for an hour.
Following the incident, the husband of the woman filed a written complaint with the police. The cops arrested 30 people -- nine of them from the family.
Heavy security has been deployed to the village after the arrests were made. "We have arrested 30 persons including nine from the woman's family. We have booked them under relevant sections of the IPC," Dhankar told TOI.
According to the police:
"The panchayat members blackened her face with coal and then forced her to sit on a donkey. They then paraded her throughout the village for an hour on Saturday evening," said the officer.
