Suicide or encounter--conflicting account of gunman's death

By Our Staff Correspondent
FAISALABAD: Ghulam Mohammadabad police allegedly killed a gunman in an encounter late on Tuesday, area people say.

Police, however, said the gunman, identified as Zahid, committed suicide when he was caught by a mob after a robbery.

Police said four gunmen looted a motorcycle and Rs5,000 from Kamran near Adam Chowk in Ghulam Mohammadabad and shot at him on resistance.

Gunshots attracted nearby shopkeepers and area people who chased the gunmen and caught one of them, Zahid. The mob first thrashed him and later called the police.

Police said the people shifted Kamran to hospital because of the gunshot wound where he was received dead.

Police said Zahid had shot at himself fearing the mob wrath and arrest. The area people, however, refute the police statement.

They shouted slogans against the police outside Allied Hospital.

They told reporters they had handed over the gunman to police at the crime scene but police killed him in an encounter.

They said street crimes had increased manifold in the district but the policemen made robbery victims a rolling stone. They said station house officers would not register cases despite directions from senior police officers.

They said robbers had been striking even in broad daylight fearlessly.

A police handout said the deceased was identified as Zahid, of Sarfraz Colony. He was involved in murder, robbery and other heinous crimes.

Police claimed 19 cases had been registered against Zahid with Jhang Bazaar, Ghulam Mohammadabad and other police stations of Faisalabad.
